Mr McCollam, I am appalled and confused by the inaction taken by your office regarding the matter of Wendy Clemente. As an elected official that ran on a platform of “holding criminals accountable” and “centering victims in every decision made by the Prosecutor’s Office”, and above all “restoring public confidence in the rule of law,” it is unfathomable to me that your office chose to drop the charges against someone attempting to commit murder again a child! I find the excuse that this was her first offense, inexcusable. This person needs to be held accountable for their actions. If she had succeeded in committing the murder, would you have continued to use that lame excuse? Although statistics state the crime in Spokane is at its lowest in six years, we are still 17% higher than the national average. Seventeen percent higher!! That is unacceptable. Assaults increased by 12% by early this year, and our violent crime remains higher than many US communities, with a 1 in 407 chance of being a victim. That means if you attend a Spokane Indians game, approximately 12 people at that game will be a victim of crime. Even in light of all that, your office still deemed it appropriate to give nothing more than a warning and a minimal penalty to a woman who, while driving under the influence, mounted a curb and attempted to run down an innocent child; an outcome that is both astonishing and unacceptable. Not only can I promise you that I will not be voting for you, but I also believe it is in the best interest of the county that you are removed from office for dereliction of duty & violation of oath of office. (RWC 36.27.020, RWC 2.48.220) You purposely ignored and willfully neglected your statutory duties by refusing to prosecute these crimes. This is a women who, in her “first offense” violated multiple laws, driving while under the influence, assault, attempted manslaughter at the minimum. I demand you reconsider your position on this matter.
