Dear Commissioners: During the current pause on new large scale data center permits, I ask you to review very important findings and recommendations from stakeholders in our state who have studied hyperscale data centers and their effects. Below are links to PDFs of such important information and recommendations. On top of what is documented in the links below, both hydrogen splitting plants and large data centers also have enormous fire risks. Hydrogen is extremely flammable (recall the Hindenburg!). Both types of plants/centers use flammable fuels, high voltage electricity prone to sparks, risk of meltdowns, flammable batteries, and more. Such centers must be required to have strong fire risk mitigation and on-site fire-fighting services paid for by the companies in question. Furthermore, large scale data centers are programmed to disconnect from the electrical grid when power fluctuations are detected and when this can cause meltdown of the grid with irreversible damage. Data centers should NOT be allowed in our county via standard development processes. There should be new regulations specific to data centers, including smaller ones that wish to expand, and specific to hydrogen splitting plants, as well. Indeed, such data centers and hydrogen plants should not be allowed here at all. We have far too much to lose, and we would lose it for mass surveillance and propaganda and not any real benefit. Furthermore, what many are not discussing is that there are already small programs, including on our phones, that do not use the resources that hyperscale data centers do which can do much of the work of AI. No one needs AI to run a simple browser search. AI should be used for specific massive tasks and not routine ones. Plus, China already has open source AI on the cheap that is growing in use around the world. The "race" for AI is a fiction promoting a large economic bubble by large American AI companies.
